Simon Fairbairn – Aural Antidotes for a Prescribed Life

The drums are all done.  Three tracks nailed and mixed to a fine paste.

It’s been a hell of a challenge.  I haven’t had much drum recording experience so there was a lot of reading – Guerilla Home Recording was incredibly helpful, as was Hometracked – and a lot of finding of plugins – Ambience Reverb and the Fish Fillets are all worth checking out – but I think I came up with something pretty good.

Attempting to match my mix against The Deftone’s Digital Bath was definitely a humbling experience, but it certainly helped to have something to aim for.

Moving on to the funky, funky bass next.  Oh yeah.

Today was kind of a long day.  ‘This Life’ features some crazy syncopation on the chorus that took me an age to get nailed, but I got there.  It’s all about the rhythm -  90% of musical problems are caused by not understanding the rhythm.

I totally just made that up.

Anyway, after 30 takes, I finally nailed the drums for ‘This Life’ and I’m pleased with how they came out.  Moving on to doing the drums for ‘Give Away’ next, and then I’m starting the bass for ‘Big Brother’.

It’s all coming together.

Alright, so the vanilla package of Wordpress isn’t exactly the last word in website cleverness.  But there are plans afoot.  Great huge website plans that will make this space an exciting musical space.  These things take time, so in the meantime simple Wordpress it is.

Recording is going well.  I have one drum track down out of three.  Second one should be done today and maybe even the third, if it all goes smoothly.

Here’s a photo of the kit all miked up and ready to go.  Anyone familiar with recording techniques will notice that I’m, controversially, using only one mic as an overhead and it’s a large diaphragm condenser.  What can I say?  I’m limited by what I got lying around…
